TATA INSTITUTE OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH National Centre of the Government of India for Nuclear Science & Mathematics Homi Bhabha Road, Colaba, Mumbai 400 005 Advertisement No.12/2010 Applications are invited for the following posts for the “Infra Red Spectroscopic Imaging Survey” (IRSIS) experiment funded by ISRO under their Small Satellite Mission. The selected candidates will be posted at the Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics of the Institute at Mumbai, for a period of two years initially. The members may have to spend extended periods of time at other collaborating laboratories located at Bangalore and/or Pune. 1. SCIENTIFIC OFFICER [Mechanical] : One Post [Unreserved]; Consolidated Salary : Rs.28,500/- + HRA ; HQ : Mumbai. Qualification : B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering with minimum 60% marks. Desirable : Experience of mechanical design & analysis using software like AutoCAD, Solid Works, ANSYS, STAAD Pro etc. Job Description : The Member will carry out structural design of the mechanical subsystems of IRSIS payload and analyze its survivability under vibration, shock & thermal stresses using various simulation software. He/She will deliver manufacturing drawings and will need to guide mechanics on the shop-floor during fabrication. Age : Below 28 years. 2. SCIENTIFIC OFFICER [Optics] : One Post [Unreserved] ; Consolidated Salary : Rs.28,500/- + HRA ; HQ : Mumbai. Qualification : M.Sc. (Physics) with specialization in Optics with 60% marks with 1 – 2 years experience in a laboratory with activities related to optics OR Bachelor’s Degree in Optical Engineering / Technology with minimum 60% marks. Desirable : Knowledge of optical design software like ZEMAX. Job Description : The member will work on various aspects of optical design of the telescope & spectrometer for IRSIS experiment. Extensive use of software for optics simulations (e.g. ZEMAX) is anticipated. Age : Below 28 years. 3. POST DOCTORAL FELLOW : One Post ; Consolidated Salary : Rs.21000/- + HRA : HQ : Mumbai. Qualification : Ph.D. in Physics/Astronomy. Desirable : Experience in experimental techniques and / or numerical simulations. Job Description : The member will primarily assist in assessment and optimization of various technical and operational details of the IRSIS experiment. He/She will co-ordinate with several members of the IRSIS team/ ISRO units at Mumbai, Pune & Bangalore on a regular basis. In addition to the activities related to IRSIS the member will be free to carry out research in astronomy either independently or in collaboration with some members of the IRSIS team. 4. PROJECT ASSISTANT (Electronics) : One Post [Unreserved] ; Consolidated Salary : Rs.16,000/- + HRA ; HQ : Mumbai. Qualification : H.S.C. with 60% marks and 2 to 3 year Diploma in Electrical/Electronics/Communications or equivalent qualification with 60% marks OR S.S.C. with 60% marks and 4 year Diploma in Electrical/ Electronics/Communications or equivalent qualifications with 60% marks OR B.Sc. (Physics) with 60% marks and 2 years suitable experience in electronics design / programming. Desirable : Experience in electronics design and/or programming in any language. Job Description : The member will participate in carrying out detailed laboratory tests, analyze the data & prepare summary/reports related to electronic sub-systems under the guidance of senior engineers. Age : Below 28 years 5. PROJECT ASSISTANT (Physics) : Two Posts [1-Unreserved & 1-Other Backward Class] ; Consolidated Salary : Rs.16,000/- + HRA ; HQ : Mumbai. Qualification : B.Sc. (with Physics as major subject) with 60% marks and 2 years experience in any research laboratory OR M.Sc. Physics with Optics/Astronomy as elective with 60% marks. Job Description : The member will conduct laboratory tests related to cryogenic and optical sub-systems under the guidance of senior scientist/engineers. He/She will maintain test set-ups, prepare test reports regularly. Age : Below 28 years for unreserved candidates and below 31 years for Other Backward Class candidates. Higher starting salary could be considered to deserving candidates. The work may involve travelling and spending time at various units of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) at Bangalore/Ahmedabad etc. and other collaborating research organizations or other centres/field stations of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (Pune, Hyderabad). HRA 30% on consolidated salary. Prescribed age should not exceed as on July 1, 2010.
